Anglican Church of Melanesia elects new Archbishop

The Anglican Church of Melanesia has a new Archbishop. He is the Rt Rev David Vunagi who is currently the Bishop of the Diocese of Temotu in Solomon Islands. Bishop Vunagi was elected  by the Provincial electoral board on the afternoon of March 4th at Tetete Ni Kolivuti; headquarters of the Sisters of the Church east of Honiara.

The current situation in the Solomons

Solomon Islands is not the place it used to be before the ethnic tension in 1997, especially on Malaita and Guadalcanal where much of the fighting and criminal activity has taken place. At the end of May this year, when the government amnesty for those in possession of firearms and stolen property such as motor vehicles, expired, life has been slowly returning to normal. No more gunshots are heard; theft, drunkenness and the demanding of compensation have all reduced dramatically.

New Bishop of Temotu announced

The Archbishop of Melanesia, the Most Reverend Sir Ellison Pogo, has today announced the name of the person who will become the third Bishop of Temotu. Following a meeting of the Diocesan Electoral Board and confirmation by the Council of Bishops of the name put forward, the new Bishop will be the Reverend Canon David Vunagi, who is presently the Church's Mission Secretary.

Anglican Sisters of the Church receive news from the Solomon Islands

Sister Frances from the Community of the Sisters of the Church, reports that they have received news of the Sisters in the Solomon Islands. All of them are safe so far and they have been very busy caring for their fellow Solomon Islanders. Sister Judith phoned from Australia on Wednesday 7 June after telecommunications were re-established, and spoke to one of the Sisters at Patteson House in Honiara. Sister Judith phoned a second time today, 8 June, and she was told that the situation is becoming very serious in the area surrounding Patteson House, the Sisters' Community House.
