Bishops continue moratorium on same-gender blessings

Bishop Hiltz Elected Primate on Fifth Ballot

After a nail-biting election that took nearly three hours, a majority of the delegates of the General Synod elected Bishop Fred Hiltz of the diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island as the 13th Primate or national Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Canada. Bishop Hiltz, 53, was elected on June 22 on the fifth ballot, garnering 60 out of 116 votes (51.7 per cent) from clergy, and 81 out of 137 votes from laity (59 per cent). Bishop Victoria Matthews of the diocese of Edmonton came in a close second, with 56 votes from clergy, and 56 from the laity

Resolutions from the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada

The General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada has narrowly defeated a resolution that would have allowed dioceses to decide for themselves whether or not to bless same-sex unions. Lay delegates voted 78 to 59 in favour of the motion and clergy voted 63 to 53 in favour But the House of Bishops voted 21-19 against it. As a result the motion was defeated, since it required approval by each of the three orders to pass

Arctic to begin rebuilding 'igloo church'

A groundbreaking service for St. Jude's Cathedral in Iqaluit has been scheduled for June 3, Trinity Sunday, to mark the rebuilding of the igloo-shaped church, which was damaged by arson in November 2005 and demolished in June 2006. Canadian Anglican Theological Commission clarifies provenance of same-sex blessings resolutions

The Primate's Theological Commission, a group appointed by the Anglican Primate to consult on theological matters, has released a clarification concerning resolutions on the blessing of same-sex unions approved earlier this month by the church's governing council.

The resolutions, approved by the Council of General Synod for the consideration of the church's General Synod this summer, have been described as dealing with The St. Michael Report. But in fact only one of them does, the commission says in its statement.

The Third Afro-Anglicanism Conference ended July 26 with a rousing worship service relating to the conference's theme 'Celebrating the Gifts of Afro-Anglicanism.' Archbishop Crawley made acting primate of Canada

Archbishop Michael Peers' 18-year primacy of the Anglican Church of Canada officially ended with his retirement last weekend. As of Sunday 1 February, the church is under an acting primate until Archbishop Peers' successor is elected at General Synod on May 31. Candidates for this election will be nominated by members of the House of Bishops when it meets in Regina in April.

Primate of Canada laments 'diehard secularism' in last public address before retirement

Archbishop Michael Peers has called on various religious traditions in Canada to rise above their differences and renew their public role in society saying their contributions are "particularly crucial" as more and more Canadians are "losing confidence in the common good". In a speech before the Empire Club of Canada in Toronto, his last public address before retiring as primate on 1 February, Archbishop Peers also spoke out against "diehard secularism" citing the recent "dangerous decision" made by the French government to ban the use in public of Muslim headscarves, Jewish skullcaps, and Christian crosses of any size, and the absence of religious references during the Sept 11, 2001, memorial service on Parliament Hill.

Former diocese of Cariboo has a bishop again

Parishes in the former British Columbia diocese of Cariboo, Canada, will once again have a bishop. Now called the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior (APCI), representatives from the parishes on January 10 nominated Canon Gordon Light to the position of bishop suffragan to the metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of British Columbia and the Yukon, currently Archbishop David Crawley.

Some of the callers and writers were viciously, personally abusive, others were supportive, others disappointed and still others were confused. That was the range of reaction reported by Bishop Ralph Spence and Dean Peter Wall of the diocese of Niagara after Dean Wall married a lesbian couple last August at Christ's Church Cathedral in Hamilton, Ontario.

Nova Scotia elects third woman bishop in Canadian church

The diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island has elected a well-known priest and social justice advocate as its suffragan, or assistant, bishop. Susan Moxley is the diocese's first female bishop and only the third woman ever to be elected to Canada's house of 42 active bishops.
