Death of former Primate of Sudan

On the evening of Friday 18th September 2009, former Archbishop of the Episcopal Church of the Sudan and Bishop of Juba, Dr. Joseph Marona, passed away at a relative's home in Khartoum, Sudan.

He had retired as the Third Archbishop of the ECS on 30th December 2007 and was replaced by the Fourth Archbishop Dr. Daniel Deng Bul in February 2008. Though quite ill he returned to Maridi, Western Equatoria State, in retirement, but paid frequent visits to Khartoum on health grounds.

"Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him"

His body will be brought to All Saints' Cathedral, Khartoum, where it will lie in state on Wednesday 23rd September. On Thursday 24th September the coffin will be flown to Juba and on to Maridi to be seen by mourners in his home town. It will then return to Juba in the evening to lie in state in All Saints' Cathedral, Juba, on the night of Thursday 24th.

The burial service will take place on the morning of Friday 25th September in All Saints' Cathedral, Juba, as the former Archbishop is laid to rest alongside his predecessors behind the Cathedral.
