The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has today sent a letter to the bishops of the Anglican Communion, setting out his personal reflections on the Lambeth Conference.
A series of 10 video journals featuring more than 30 bishops from around the world attending the 2008 Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Communion are now available for viewing at Trinity Wall Street's website.
‘We are witnesses,’ says Peter in our reading from Acts, ‘of what Jesus did in Judea, Jerusalem and Galilee’ (10.39). We have a story to tell. But to be ‘witnesses’ can, at first, sound almost as if it’s not strong enough or particular enough. Witnesses get called in law suits; they’re bystanders very often, who can tell you what happened. It could be almost anybody. But the apostolic witness is something different.

I began the second of these plenary addresses with a reminder of the question, ‘What is Lambeth ’08 going to say?’ And I suggested that we also needed to ask ‘Where are we going to speak from?’ I hope that in recent days there has been some growing clarity about both of these questions and how we answer them
The Reflections Group has been privileged to serve the Lambeth Conference in their capacity as Listeners in and for their indaba. Face to face conversations, often exchanging conflicting and challenging points of view, have led to deeper understanding and new insights. The Archbishop of Canterbury came to the Spouses’ Venue to bless the Vine which the spouses have been making throughout the Conference. He said: ‘On behalf of “the other Conference” we want to thank you for being here and for all you have said and done. You have reminded us of things we could have forgotten and thank you for anchoring us

Lives in war torn parts of Africa are being transformed thanks to the hard work of the Anglican Church, the Spouses Conference heard yesterday.
“I believe firmly that the Anglican Communion is going to continue by God’s grace and divine providence, but we do have problems,” observed Archbishop Drexel Gomez, Primate of the West Indies and chair of the Covenant Design Group.

The Lambeth Conference isn’t just a story of Bishops and the ‘great and good’. One of the largest groups of people around on the campus is the 300 volunteers from Canterbury Diocese – they are the ones with the yellow lanyards and/or sashes.

The Revd Jackie Cray, the newly ordained wife of the Bishop of Maidstone, Kent, England, introduced the spouses to the session by reflecting upon the journey that they had travelled together which had led them to this point in the programme.
Our meditation this morning is the first in the month of August, for our Lambeth gathering being the first one in the first decade of the new millennium. As we begin let us remind ourselves of John’s message to continue strengthening the faith of our people that Jesus is God–man and is the sustainer of this creation.
