The Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) received the news of the horrific effects of the Tsunami that hit South East Asia and parts of East Africa on Boxing Day with profound shock and sorrow.
We have continued to watch with disbelief as thousands of bodies are retrieved from the masses of debris and millions of men, women and children left without food, water, clothing and shelter. Our hearts go out to them.
In times of devastation like this, when no one can comprehend such human calamity, we can only turn to the living God for comfort and solace that only He can give. At this time, I thought of Romans 11:33-36 as a comforting passage of scripture.
The Chairman of CAPA, the Most Revd Peter J Akinola, CAPA Primates, Bishops, myself personally and all Anglicans across Africa would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to those who died and to assure you of our continued prayers and support at this very difficult time.
Our prayers also go to the thousands of survivors who are recuperating in various hospitals in your Province. We wish them God's healing touch and speedy recovery from this trauma.
We have noted the details of the crisis relief to the Province of South East Asia and in a small way, as a gesture of our support and solidarity with you, we shall be responding to that noble appeal.
May God's gracious favour and peace be yours at this time of loss and recovery to life.
