New Primate of Uganda elected

[ACNS source: Council of Anglican Provinces in Africa (CAPA)] The Rt Revd Henry Orombi has been elected to replace outgoing Archbishop of Uganda, the Most Revd Livingstone Mpalanyi-Nkoyoyo.

Sources said Bishop Orombi of Nebbi Diocese was voted by a majority of the 32 Bishops of the Church of the Province of Uganda on Friday 4 July 2003. He will take over from Archbishop Nkoyoyo, whose 10-year term expires in January next year.

Bishop Orombi, 54, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology from London. "I believe we have made the most appropriate choice," said Bishop Paul Luzinde of Mukono soon after the election at the Namirembe Cathedral. The election was preceded by prayer and fasting for spiritual guidance.

The House of Bishops also named the Revd Dr Edward Muhima as Bishop of North Kigezi and the Revd John Muhanguzi as the new Bishop of North Ankole Diocese.

Archbishop Nkoyoyo thanked Anglicans in Uganda for their support and urged them to extend the same unwavering support to the Archbishop-elect.

CAPA General Secretary, the Revd Canon John Kanyikwa, congratulated Bishop Orombi and wished him success in his new position.

The House of Bishops also endorsed the construction of a multi-million Church of Uganda headquarters in Kampala city.
