Scottish Anglicans welcome new Archbishop

The head of the Scottish Episcopal Church today welcomed the appointment of Rowan Williams as the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Most Revd Bruce Cameron, who is 'Primus' of the Scottish Church, said: "I am absolutely delighted to hear that Rowan Williams has been appointed the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

"As bishops in our respective churches we have met on a number of occasions over recent years."

The Primus, who is also Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney, added: "He will, I believe, bring to this difficult task, an insightful mind, a compassionate and caring heart, and a voice that will be listened to beyond the walls of the Church.

"The Church today faces many challenges both in its own internal life, but more importantly, in how it engages with the issues and concerns of the world.

"I am confident that Rowan Williams will encourage us to meet these challenges head-on, and offer us a prophetic way in which to tackle them.

"I would also like to believe that the voice of one whose roots lie in the more Celtic traditions of Christianity might have much to commend itself to the Church of England which he will now lead - but a Scotsman would say that!"

Rowan Williams will head the Anglican Communion - a family of churches which includes the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Church of England and the Episcopal Church in the USA.
