Bishop Andrew Atagotaaluk - currently a suffragan, or assistant bishop - in the diocese of the Arctic, was elected coadjutor bishop on May 25, on the fourth ballot.

The title means that he will become diocesan bishop when Bishop Christopher Williams retires on 31 Aug.

Bishop Atagotaaluk, 51, is the first Inuit Anglican diocesan bishop. He was elected suffragan bishop in May 1999 after serving as a priest in Pond Inlet, Inukjuak, Spence Bay and Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut.

He has also served as a member of provincial synod and General Synod and as a member of the Council on Native Ministries.

Bishop Atagotaaluk is a graduate of the Theological Training Centre in Pangnirtung. He was ordained a deacon in 1975 and a priest in 1976. He and his wife, Mary, have six children.
