Southwark Cathedral
Feast of St Ignatius of Antioch
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd George Carey, presided at his last consecration of bishops, with now Bishop David Hamid, as one of those ordained. Bishop Hamid will serve as Suffragan Bishop in Europe (Church of England).
The Primate of Canada, Archbishop Michael Peers, was present as was a vast number of ecumenical guests, including two priests from the Vatican and a host of Orthodox prelates. The Bishop of London (the Rt Revd Richard Chartres) assisted and the Bishop of Birmingham (the Rt Revd John Sentamu) preached a powerful sermon. About 30 Anglican bishops (England, Canada, Uruguay, Nigeria, USA) were also present for the laying on of hands, with two bishops from the Old Catholic Church.
Bishop Hamid was presented by Bishop Geoffrey Rowell of Europe.
Many were on hand from the Diocese in Europe including the Dean of Gibraltar.
The Bishop of Southwark gave a special tribute to Archbishop Carey at the close of the liturgy.
Bishop Hamid's post at the ACC has been filled by Bishop John Baycroft (until June 2003).
