Press Release - Number 3
5 March 2001
Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center, USA
[ACNS, Kanuga, NC] The 2001 gathering of the Primates of the Anglican Communion is underway at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina. 35 of the 38 Primates are here. Archbishop Kwong was present for the Primates Standing Committee but had to return home for official business. Archbishop Wilson is not attending owing to ill health. There is a vacancy in North India. 12 wives of Primates are in attendance.
The meeting, which runs March 2-9, is in the nature of a retreat and has been designed as a time for mutual support and consultation. The Primates have spent time in plenary sessions for presentations and discussions, and in small groups for Bible study. The focus of the meeting has been on challenges in mission and evangelism as experienced in the various provinces.
The Archbishop of Canterbury preached at the Sunday Eucharist. His sermon is available as [ACNS2394].
As is customary for these gatherings, media reports are not issued during the course of the meeting. It is expected that a message will be forthcoming from the Primates at the conclusion of the meeting.
