Welsh clergy golf in two countries

The clergy of the Church in Wales held a golf competition recently at a course that has fifteen holes in Wales and three in England. The unique fourth hole starts in Wales and ends in England!

The Ecclesiastical Insurance Group sponsored this annual event, which this year was held at the Lanymynech Golf Club near Oswestry. The course is built on the site of a Roman hill fort, and Offa's Dyke, an ancient earthwork between England and Wales, marks one of the course's boundaries.

The misty start to the day meant very little of the course was visible from the clubhouse, but a good day's play was enjoyed. The Bishop of Llandaff, the Rt Revd Barry Morgan, played below handicap to come in a very creditable second, but he was beaten by the defending champion Canon Steve Morgan of Merthyr Tydfil. Canon Eirwyn Thomas of Nefyn was third, and the Revd Terry Williams of Tycroes, Ammanford, fourth.

A "Millennium Golf Challenge" between the Church of England, Scottish Episcopal Church, the Church in Wales and the Episcopal Church of the USA was held in July, at which eight Welsh clergy golfers took part. The annual match between the Church in Wales and the Church of England takes place at Shrewsbury in September.
