(CPSA) A delegation from the Church of the Province of Southern Africa (Anglican), has met the Minister of Education, Professor Sibusiso Bengu, to make representations regarding several issues relating to education.

Led by the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Revd Njongonkulu Ndungane, the delegation had wide-ranging discussions with the Minister over the continued inequalities in the provision at public schools, especially for the poor and ultra-poor. This included concern over the proposed reduction in the number of teachers, and the growing tension between government and unions representing teachers.

Archbishop Ndungane, who was accompanied by the Church's liaison bishop on education, the Right Revd Peter Lee, his chaplain, the Revd James Keetile, educationist Ms Marlene Sasman and a teacher at special school, Mr Lawrence Hoepner, said the delegation had affirmed its support for the culture of learning, teaching and service.

The Church conveyed to the Minister the concerns that it is hearing, at grassroots level, from parents and educators. Particular concern was expressed about the planned transformation of special schools. The Church is worried about the development of a particular crisis in these schools in the Western Cape.

The CPSA and the Minister agreed to maintain contact on the issues raised. A further statement is likely to be issued by the Anglican Church after its Synod of Bishops has heard a report when it meets late next month.
