The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd George Carey, gave thanks for the renovation of Gibraltar Cathedral last week.

In an All Saints Day sermon, he encouraged the churches of the Diocese of Europe that they were not "semi-detached" from the Church of England, but were taken seriously. He said that the churches in Europe were highly "regarded" and "precious". Such churches had a unique role to play in showing the Church how to live a unified life in the midst of diversity, he indicated.

"Your work as an Anglican Cathedral is set in a place which is predominately Catholic", he said to worshippers at Gibraltar Cathedral. "Anglicans in places like this seek to cooperate and not proselytise; we seek to engage in a common witness and shared testimony to the faith of Jesus Christ who calls us to 'remember where we stand'."
