Churches call for constitutional review

An immediate constitutional review and an all-party dialogue on the composition of the country's next electoral commission have been called for both by the National Council of Churches in Kenya and Kenya's Roman Catholic Bishops.

Both bodies have said that change must come before the next general election, which has to take place before the end of 1997. The Government reacted to the call by accusing Church leaders of having a hidden agenda aimed at precipitating anarchy.
