On day two of the bishops’ retreat, the benefits of the time of prayer and reflection have been felt by many.
Many of the Lambeth spouses are like the boy with the bunch of bananas on his head who accepted a lift but didn't put down the fruit - because although they have left some of their burdens at home, many carry some burdens with them. So began a session on storytelling in the spouses’ conference.
Jane Williams launched the book ‘Marriage, Mitres and Myself’ on Thursday 17 July at the Lambeth Conference. The Sports Hall, which has been transformed into the Spouses Venue, was filled with the members of the Spouses Conference and their spouses – the Bishops!
The laughs and sighs of the many bishops and spouses gathering to register for the Lambeth Conference gave us all a chance to simply relax and be patient, realising God may have some great revelations for us all in the days ahead, starting with the traditional English queue.

The bishops of the Lambeth conference will enter into retreat today, continuing a practice as ancient as Christianity itself.

The Spouses Conference opened today as the delegates gathered for the first time. The 550 or so spouses are meeting in the huge sports hall which has been transformed into an attractive café style meeting room to facilitate the conversation.

Some 650 Anglican bishops from all over the world are making their way to Canterbury for the Lambeth Conference 2008 focussi ng on the theme: Equipping Bishops for Mission. The Conference will begin with a three-day retreat and, as in previous Conferences, every day will begin with Eucharist and Bible study in small groups.

Before the bishops arrive in Canterbury for the 2008 Lambeth Conference, hundreds of them will enjoy a taste of another part of Britain. Through the “Hospitality Initiative,” every bishop and spouse invited to the Lambeth Conference has also been invited to be the guest of an Anglican diocese in England, Wales, or Scotland.

Bishop of Gloucester moved: ‘That this Synod: (a) affirm that the wish of its majority is for women to be admitted to the episcopate; (b) affirm its view that special arrangements be available, within the existing structures of the Church of England, for those who as a matter of theological conviction will not be able to receive the ministry of women as bishops or priests

There will be a strong ecumenical presence at the 2008 Lambeth Conference. The Archbishop of Canterbury will welcome more than 75 representatives from a wide variety of churches and Christian communities. Two of the principal speakers at the conference come from the ecumenical world.

Any congregation might be forgiven for wondering what are we going to hear about this morning. Members of Synod in particular (but perhaps members of the Church of England in general) may have the slight sense that there's rather too much to be hearing about, that we're suffering somewhat from issue fatigue.

There can be very few who would resist the view that Richard Hooker is even more formative of Anglican Theology and the Anglican theological method than was Thomas Cranmer of Anglican liturgy. Furthermore, the 16th century debate within which Hooker made his most significant contribution was one with striking similarities to the debate underlying the troubled state of the Anglican Communion today.

The Most Revd Phillip Aspinall, Archbishop of Brisbane and Primate of the Anglican Province of Australia will act as principal spokesman for the Anglican Communion bishops attending the 14th Lambeth Conference which meets in Canterbury from 20 July to August 4.

Lisbon’s Cathedral Church of St Paul was over flowing with people on Saturday as the Lusitanian Church in Portugal celebrated the 50th anniversary of the consecration of their first bishop. The Lusitanian Church is an extra provincial diocese to the Archbishop of Canterbury with its Anglican Communion roots coming from the Church of Ireland, the Episcopal Church USA and Igreja Anglican Episcopal of Brazil.

This special series - focusing on St John’s Gospel - complements the Bible studies in which the bishops and their spouses will take part during the Lambeth Conference 2008.

The Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion (CUAC) met at Chung Chi College in Hong Kong during the last week in May. With more than 120 institutions on all five continents, the association promotes cross-cultural contacts and educational programs.

Media/press persons desiring accreditation for the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury, Kent (UK) are asked to complete the 'initial' application by 16 June at the latest. The dates of the conference are 20 July – 4 August at the University of Kent at Canterbury. Successful applicants will be notified within 48 hours.

We the Bishops of the Anglican Church of the Province of Central Africa, comprising Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, “called to share in Jesus’ work of sanctifying and shepherding his people and of speaking in God’s name”.
