The 18th Provincial Assembly of the Church of the Province of Uganda was opened on Wednesday, 30th August 2006 at Uganda Christian University, Mukono by the Rt Hon Prime Minister, Prof Apolo Nsibambi.
Bishop Nelson Onono-Onweng, Bishop of Northern Uganda Diocese in the Church of Uganda (Anglican), was among a group of religious, cultural, and political leaders that traveled to the Garamba Forest in northeastern Congo to meet face-to-face with Joseph Kony, the leader of the rebel group known as the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The meeting took place on Monday, 31st July 2006
On 30th August 2006, during the recently ended Provincial Assembly, the House of Bishops reached a compromise solution on a way forward for Muhabura Diocese.
In 2001 the House of Bishops elected Rev. Canon David Sebuhinja to be the Bishop-elect of Muhabura Diocese. The Head of Laity and other leaders in the Diocese, however, refused to accept his appointment. This led to a five-year standoff between different groups in Muhabura Diocese and the House of Bishops.
A top Ugandan church leader has said efforts need to be made to keep the peace process in northern Uganda on track after agreement by government forces and rebels belonging to the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) to cease hostilities.
'It now clear any doubts about the seriousness of these talks and challenges need to focus on things that keep the dialogue on track,' the Rev. Grace Kaiso, executive secretary of the Uganda Joint Christian Council, told Ecumenical News International in Nairobi.
Statement by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda
On 15th March 2006, I and all the people of Uganda woke up to read in The New Vision that Christopher Ssenyonjo, the second Bishop of West Buganda Diocese, had a new 'Archbishop called Howard' in America and had formed a new denomination called the Charismatic Church of Uganda, and had consecrated a bishop.
I regret that Ssenyonjo did not have the courtesy to contact me personally about his decision to abandon the Church of Uganda and seek a new Archbishop. Our church canons (church laws) provide for a Bishop to relinquish the exercise of ordained ministry when he affiliates with another religious body not in communion with the Church of Uganda. When, however, a Bishop does not do that, our canons stipulate that he has abandoned the Church of Uganda.

In our view, an election is free and fair if it is conducted substantially in conformity with the relevant laws and regulations.

About 80 children at the Chain Foundation Orphanage in Kampala, Uganda will be receiving Christmas gifts from Canada as a result of an initiative by Anglican Video, General Synod's video production company.
"Most of the children at the orphanage lost their parents to HIV/AIDS," said Becky Boucher Anglican Video production manager. "We felt that we needed to do something for them this Christmas."
Celebrations to mark 100 years of Christianity in Acholi have started. Believers walked from the Northern Diocese through Gulu streets to Keyo Hill on Saturday.
The Bishop of the Northern Uganda Diocese, the Rt Revd Nelson Onono-Onweng, led a procession of believers to open the week-long activities, while the Christ Church Choir coloured the occasion.
Acholi religious leaders are expected to participate in the activities.
The grand celebrations will be at Keyo Hill in Lamogi sub-county, Kilak county in Gulu district on Sunday.

The Most Revd Henry Luke Orombi, the Primate of the Church of the Province of Uganda, has called for international pressure on the Lord's Resistance Army to force them into peace talks with the Ugandan government. MUKONO, Uganda - Work is almost complete on a maternity and childcare hospital built to serve the Batwa population by the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas.
A Bishop who is a leading voice drawing attention to the suffering caused by the Lord's Resistance Army in northwest Uganda was himself abducted last night (18 May). The situation in northwest Uganda is the subject of the Church Mission Society (CMS) ' 'Break the Silence' campaign.
