Anglicans mourn Bishop Ereaku

Abuja, Dec. 14, 2005- The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) is in a state of mourning after the death of a young enterprising and evangelical Bishop.

Laudamus Atushiaka Ereaku, 52, Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Bauchi died on Monday 12th December, in an automobile accident while on an inter-faith peace programme in the State. The three other occupants of the vehicle including the Islamic Sheikh also died in the accident.

Bishop elected, applications for more dioceses

Following the translation of Bishop Simon Bala to the missionary Diocese of Kubwa, the Episcopal synod of the Church of Nigeria has announced the election of the Revd Canon John Garba as the new Bishop of Gusau Diocese.

Also the Standing Committee of the Church has received application for the creation of three additional dioceses.

Death of Archbishop Agbaje

Archbishop of Bendel Province Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) the Most Rev Albert Agbaje is dead. He died in Sabongidda-Ora on 31 January 2005 at the age of 68.

Until his death, he was the Bishop of Sabongidda-Ora and the Archbishop of ecclesiastical province of Bendel comprising the dioceses of Benin, Asaba, Warri, Sabongida-Ora, Ughelli, Oleh, Esan and Ika.

Consecrated in 1993 Archbishop Agbaje was the pioneer Bishop of the Diocese of Sabongida-Ora. He was ordained priest in 1973 and served in different dioceses including the Diocese of Benin and the Diocese of Lagos.

Burial arrangements will be announced later.

Church of Nigeria now has 91 dioceses

The Episcopal Synod of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has announced the election of ten new Bishops.

In a statement issued at the weekend in Abuja, Director of Communication of the Church of Nigeria, The Rev Canon Tunde Popoola said the election was made at the Bishops' meeting held in The Chapel of St Peter, Ibru Centre Agbarha-Otor in Delta state.

Bishop Egbunu enthroned in Lokoja

Abuja, 1 Dec 2004 -The Rt Revd Emmanuel Egbunu has been enthroned as the second Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lokoja.

Bishop Egbunu was enthroned on Tuesday at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity Lokoja during an elaborate ceremony attended by 15 bishops including the Primate of All Nigeria, Most Revd Peter Akinola.

President challenges bishops on morality

President Olusegun Obasajo of Nigeria has challenged Anglican bishops meeting in Nigeria to provide courageous and godly leadership in matters of faith and moral conduct.

He said the bishops must be clear and authoritative voices on moral issues facing humanity. "The truth of the gospel must be preserved by all of us and particularly yourselves," he said.

Approval for the new dioceses was given in Enugu at the just concluded National meeting attended by members of the House of Bishops, the clergy and the laity.

Archbishop Akinola commends AU leader

The Most Revd Peter Akinola, the Primate of all Nigeria, has commended the role played by the African Union (AU) leader and President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, for his efforts to resolve the Sudan crisis, which is centred on the country's Dafur region.

Archbishop Akinola also condemned the perpetrators of violence in the region and called for justice. He made statements at the end of a four-day standing committee meeting of the Church of Nigeria in Enugu, in the country's south-east.
