Nine Church of Ireland bishops who act as patrons of Church of Ireland Schools in the Republic of Ireland are today voicing their strong concerns about the prospect of cuts, which could have a particularly dramatic negative impact on small Church of Ireland schools across the country, particularly those in rural areas which cannot be amalgamated.
The 1,517 lives lost in the Titanic tragedy will be commemorated in a beautiful hand-crafted funeral pall which will be dedicated in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, a century after the disaster.
As previously announced, the Archbishops and Bishops of the Church of Ireland will host a conference for members of the Church’s General Synod on the subject of ‘Human Sexuality in the context of Christian Belief’ at the Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan tomorrow, Friday 9th through to Saturday 10th March 2012.
Douglas Hyde’s ‘modern Irish’ translation of St Patrick’s Breastplate
Irishness and complex identity issues within the Church of Ireland in the early 20th-century are revealed in the RCB Library’s Archive of the Month online feature for March. This covers the story of Douglas Hyde’s ‘modern Irish’ translation of the St Patrick’s Breastplate hymn, which he provided at the request of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise, the Irish Guild of the Church of Ireland, in 1915.
The Revd Canon Victor Stacey has (Tuesday 28 February 2012) been elected as the next Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, in succession to The Very Revd Dr Robert MacCarthy, who retired at the end of January. St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and the dean is elected from among the members of the Cathedral Chapter by the members of the Chapter.

The Right Revd Ken Clarke, Bishop of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh, has been appointed as the new full-time Mission Director of SAMS Ireland (South American Mission Society). He will take up the post later this year and continue as bishop of his diocese until the Autumn. Bishop Ken Clarke is in his twelfth year as Bishop of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh, having been elected as bishop on the 13th November 2000.
THE Church of Ireland has approved an official liturgy for services this year to mark the centenary of the Ulster Covenant.

The Diocesan Bishops of the Anglican Celtic Churches (Scotland, Ireland and Wales) together with their Primates will meet in Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland from Monday 26th to Thursday 29th September. The bishops of the celtic churches meet together every two years and each of the three provinces takes it in turns to host the meeting.

The fact that the Very Reverend Thomas Gordon, Dean of Leighlin, entered a Civil Partnership on 29th July last has created a new situation for the Church of Ireland. In many parts of the Church, the matter is seen as controversial. In such a situation it is important that great care be taken in anything that may be said.

A special service of Thanksgiving and Dedication will be held in St Columb’s Cathedral, Londonderry on Sunday 11 September at 7.30 pm. Following on from the major celebrations on June 9 to mark the complete restoration of the historic building, the service on Sunday evening will focus on the life of the Cathedral in terms of its music and choral tradition.
