Primate's Fund increases aid to Sudan

The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) has provided an additional $15,000 emergency relief aid for the troubled region of Darfur, Sudan, where according to the United Nations the "worst humanitarian crisis in the world" is unfolding.

Canadian Church highlights flaws in refugee system

Canadian Church leaders have called upon their Federal Government to address the flawed refugee determination system. A campaign letter was sent to the Canadian Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and highlighted at a press conference held on 4 August at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Toronto.

Archbishop Tutu at Scott Memorial Service

The retired Archbishop of Cape Town and former Primate of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa, gave the following homily at the memorial service for Archbishop Edward "Ted" Scott, at St James Cathedral, Toronto, Canada on Monday 13 July. Archbishop Scott, who was the former Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, died in a car accident last month.

UN Envoy to address Canada Synod

Stephen Lewis, Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa for the Secretary-General of the United Nations will address more than 300 members of the Anglican Church of Canada's chief governing and legislative body when they meet later this month in St. Catharines, Ontario

His presentation on AIDS, scheduled for the morning of June 2, will highlight a half-day long session on the global pandemic.

Mr. Lewis has traveled throughout Africa in his capacity as special envoy on HIV/AIDS and has worked closely with African leaders, a United Nations team and local coordinators.

He has also set up a charitable foundation 'The Stephen Lewis Foundation' to help local African agencies cope with the devastation caused by AIDS.

Bishops select candidates for primatial election

Regina, Sask. - Canadian Anglican bishops have selected four from among their own number to be candidates for an election to the office of Primate, which will be held next month in St Catharines, Ont.

Council crafts motion on same-sex blessing

The Anglican Church of Canada's chief governing body will be asked to affirm that the blessing of same-sex unions is within the authority of a diocesan synod and that any Canadian Anglican diocese, if the bishop agrees, has the authority to perform such blessings.

At a meeting March 4 - 7, the Council of General Synod (CoGS) approved the wording of two motions that will be placed before the General Synod when it meets at the end of May. General Synod, made up of delegates from each of the church's 30 dioceses, is the church's main legislative and governing body. It meets every three years.

Canadian Archbishop to retire

TORONTO - The Most Reverend Terence Finlay, bishop of Canada's largest Anglican diocese, announced last night that he will retire on June 11.
