The Anglican Church of Canada has its first bishop of Asian descent - Canon Bishop-elect Patrick Yu.
Patrick Yu, the Hong Kong-born incumbent of St. Timothy's Anglican church in Agincourt, Ont, who was elected suffragan bishop in the diocese of Toronto Jan 7.
Bishop-elect Yu, 54, elected at St. James' Cathedral in Toronto, will become the area bishop of York-Scarborough, east of Toronto, which has about 70 parishes. His consecration has been scheduled for March 25. The diocese has a total of four areas overseen by four suffragan bishops and a diocesan bishop.

Toronto (Nov. 23, 2005) -- The announcement of a comprehensive agreement on native residential schools issues is good news for the Anglican Church and good news for Canada's indigenous people, Archbishop Andrew Hutchison, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada says. Archbishop Hutchison hailed Ottawa's promise of generous compensation for people who attended the Indian Residential Schools and said the Anglican church remains committed to its work in healing and reconciliation with indigenous people.

After a one-year delay, the diocese of Central Newfoundland, in an electoral synod held September 9-10, finally chose a new bishop: Rev. David Torraville.
Last year the synod was unable to elect a bishop since no candidate received more than two-thirds of the vote after 11 ballots; Mr. Torraville, who was also a candidate then, was in deadlock with Rev. John E. Watton, of the parish of Badger's Quay/Pool's Island.

In mid-March, Lynne Watson and a small army of young cooks made nearly 300 cream-filled Easter eggs to help fund Trinity Church, Aurora's second mission trip to Mexico.
The group of twelve youths and four adults are spending two weeks this month in San Miguel de Allende, about three hours northwest of Mexico City. They are painting, helping build homes for impoverished families, playing with children - and learning a lot about themselves in the process.

31 January, 2005 - The Rt Revd Victoria Matthews of Edmonton returned to active ministry this month after seven months of medical leave due to cancer.
Bishop Matthews reassured members of her diocese that she went back to work "with the permission of my doctors" and that she was not overextending herself to avoid a relapse.

About 80 children at the Chain Foundation Orphanage in Kampala, Uganda will be receiving Christmas gifts from Canada as a result of an initiative by Anglican Video, General Synod's video production company.
"Most of the children at the orphanage lost their parents to HIV/AIDS," said Becky Boucher Anglican Video production manager. "We felt that we needed to do something for them this Christmas."

The Anglican Church of Canada will join the world in commemorating World AIDS Day on Dec 1.
World AIDS Day is a time to reflect on the fight against AIDS and raise awareness about the pandemic. First declared by the World Health Organization in 1988, this day celebrates progress made in the battle against the disease and brings into focus the challenges that remain.
According to UN statistics, AIDS has killed more than 20 million people since the first cases were diagnosed in 1981, including 2.9 million in 2003 alone. It is estimated that 37.8 million people were infected with HIV at the end of 2003. Sub-Saharan Africa is the worst hit region, with 70 per cent of all people living with HIV.
