To celebrate HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, ChurchCare – a Church of England online resource – has woven together individual church histories to create a ‘Royal Map’ around England’s churches and cathedrals, celebrating the unique links between churches and the monarchy in this remarkable Jubilee year.
ChurchCare has been collecting these regal links between churches, cathedrals and the monarchy since the initiative was launched in February. The Church of England’s buildings have witnessed regal burials, baptisms, commemorations, weddings, funerals, battles, blessings and more! Whilst some of the stories received involve Queen Elizabeth II herself, there are many links to different royals from throughout English history.
We received some great stories to plot on the map – from Beverley Minster to St Mary’s, Great Leighs, from Westminster Abbey to St Ive Church, Liskeard. Each entry includes visitor information and contact details.
This map is now online: click on the link to find your nearest church or cathedral, or to find out about the other Diamond Jubilee events happening in churches near you.
If you would like to see your own church included on the map, or have an interesting tale linking a church or cathedral to our current Queen or another Royal figure, please email ben.greener@churchofengland.org.
