Christian worshippers in post-Gadhafi Tripoli

The voices, a mixture of accents, begin to fill Tripoli’s Anglican Church of Christ the King. The parishioners - some 40, primarily Indian though some Africans and westerners sprinkled among them - are accompanied by a small band including a keyboard, violin and drums.

A blue- and purple-striped sheet is draped from the ceiling. It is faded and stained where water has leaked through the roof. Paint peels from the walls. Rev. Vasihar Eben Baskaran, 51, leads the service celebrating Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

The church, which is part of the Egyptian diocese, has existed in many forms since it was consecrated in 1953. It was officially the Garrison Church of Christ the King serving the British troops in then Tripolitania. It has moved through many locations since then.
