The Archbishop of Canterbury last night warned that moves to legalise assisted suicide could spell “disaster” for society.
Dr Rowan Williams said that giving terminally ill people a “right to die” would put both vulnerable patients and doctors alike under threat.
In an outspoken address to the Church of England General Synod, he drew parallels with the growth of abortion and warned that changing the law would create circumstances in which life would be “legally declared to be not worth living”.
Dr Williams’s comments came as leading churchmen and women lined up to criticise the recent conclusions of the Commission on Assisted Dying.
The commission, chaired by the former Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer, concluded that the law could be changed allow for assisted dying in some circumstances.
A motion, backed overwhelmingly by the Synod, criticised the commission as lacking independence and failing to protect vulnerable and disabled people.
