MPs Expand List Of Recognised Churches In Hungary

"Parliament voted yesterday to recognise 32 churches, rather than the 14 acknowledged in the law passed on December 30. Opposition MPs did not take part in the voting procedure.

The extended list includes the Methodist, Pentecostal, Anglican and Mormon churches, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, two Islamic groups, the Hare Krishnas and five Buddhist congregations.

The 66 other religious communities whose applications were rejected will lose their church status and operate as societies from March 1.

They may not launch popular initiatives to gain formal recognition within a year.

Formally recognised churches are eligible for state subsidies and enjoy tax-free status."
