Year Five children from Alne Primary School, near Easingwold, have got a new maths classroom – their local church. St Mary’s Church, Alne, is hosting the maths lessons on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays while work is done at the school to build new classrooms.
Paul Platt, Headteacher at Alne Primary School, said, “A church may not seem the most obvious place to have your maths lesson, but it’s been a fantastic resource for us. While waiting for building work to start at the school we needed a place to teach the Year Five maths lessons, and Chris offered us the use of the church. It’s meant we’ve been able to keep teaching the Year Fives as a class on their own and in a smaller group.”
The Revd Chris Park, vicar of St Mary’s Church, said, “It’s been great to see the church used for such an unusual purpose! I hope the children enjoy learning in the church, and it brings something a bit different to their usual lessons. We’ve recently had a toilet and kitchen put into the church, and it’s helped us find different uses for the building. Having the toilet has meant that we’ve got the proper facilities to be able to welcome the Year Five pupils, and host their maths lessons.”
