Campaign letters in Spanish for use on World Food Day are published today on the third day of the Anglican Alliance Latin American consultation in Brazil.
The letters call on local and national leaders to take action to stop over 1 billion people going hungry every day. There's a children's version for use in schools and Sunday schools in the run up to World Food Day on October 16th and the summit of the leaders of the richest 20 countries in early November.
Today the Anglican Alliance will consider proposals for a series of distance learning modules that will equip people in local communities with some of the basic skills needed for community organisation.
The modules are being developed by the Open University in the UK and would be provided on line to Anglican church communities around the world. They include modules in consultation, programming, finances, inclusion, governance and protection of vulnerable people. They would be access level modules and would lead to a certificate of completion from the university.
The consultation will also consider setting out a theology of development, building on discussions at the Africa consultation earlier this year.
Yesterday participants visited a recycling centre in the heart of Sao Paolo where they heard from homeless people who were learning to rebuild their lives through involvement in recycling and craft work. The project supports some of the 14,000 homeless and vulnerable people who sleep on the pavements in Sao Paolo. As they are rehabilitated, they move on from sleeping in the streets, to living in a co-operative, and finally to independent life in the community.
