The Bishop of Sudan’s Diocese of Kajo Keji has appealed to brothers and sisters across the Anglican Communion for help as he faces a race against the clock in his efforts to build a cathedral there.
Rt Rev Anthony Poggo said that while generous contributions have meant the pillars and roof of the Cathedral have been built, the church faces additional costs if the final payment is not received by this December.
"Samaritan’s Purse generously contributed by building the pillars and the roof of the Cathedral,” he said. “The remaining work, namely the walls, window & door shutters, floor screed and painting will be done by the Diocese of Kajo-Keji. We employed a contractor who agreed to undertake this work for a total cost of US$125,039, provided that this is completed by December 2010, otherwise the price will have to be re-negotiated."
Far from sitting and waiting for funds to come to them, the diocese held a major fundraising event in March and raised $48,644. Five months later and that figure had gone up by another $8,000.
"As at the 31st of July 2010, we thank God that through many people’s generosity we have raised a total of $56,465 – a truly magnificent achievement!" said Bp Poggo.
This is, however, still $68,574 short of the needed amount.
Bp Poggo suggested that there might be Anglicans across the Communion interested in donating funds to complete specific parts of the construction. "The summary costs for each category is as follows in US dollars: preliminaries (841), the sub-structure (34,156), the super-structure (38.206), Finishing (9,723), Screeding & cladding (13,418), fittings (13,947), ceiling boards (3,275), painting (4,746) and electric wiring (6,727)."
The diocese's next fundraising day in Romogi, Kajo-Keji is on Sunday 21st November and Bp Poggo is praying that many people will make donations or pledges then.
Those wishing to help finish build the cathedral before the deadline should contact Bp Poggo and the Cathedral Dean on emcathedraldkk@gmail.com.
