The Rt Rev Duleep de Chickera the Bishop of Colombo of the Church of Ceylon led the Diocesan Councillors in a Peace Meditation calling an immediate halt to the 30 year long ethnic war.
The meditation was performed on the front lawn of the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour just adjoining the Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall, the premier convention centre of the island.
The meditation took place in support of a Petition submitted by two councillors on Monday 27 October, 2008 after hearing the harrowing stories of harassments and helplessness as a direct consequence of the war related by Councillors coming from all parts of the country during the first two days of the annual sessions of the Diocesan Council which began on 26 October, 2008.
All the Councillors of all ages braving the hot sun at noon indicated their determination to take the theme of this annual session “Proclaiming hope for the Helpless and the Harassed” seriously in the mission of the Diocese and also in the ecumenical interventions of parishes (local churches) which meant the church of Ceylon affirmatively working to end the war, restore democracy and rule of the law and eliminate poverty, oppression and marginalization in the years to come.
