On Mothering Sunday
As Mothering Sunday is celebrated worldwide 18th March 2007, wife of the Primate of Church of Nigeria, Mrs Susan Akinola has called on women to use this years Celebration as a period to renew their marriage vows and maintain faithfulness.
Mrs Akinola said the theme for Mothers Day in the Diocese of Abuja was Celebration of Marriage and the focus is the special duty women play both in the church and society.
She advised women to pray for the success of the forthcoming general elections and for peace to reign in the country during the exercise.
She urged mothers to set a good example for up-coming youths, particularly young women, by teaching them the Christian virtues of humility, patience and faithfulness.
She said women groups and families should use the period of the celebration to remember the less privileged in the society not only attending to their needs but also seeing that government creates the enabling environment to provide a vibrant social welfare for orphaned and vulnerable children.
Mrs Akinola, said as part of activities to mark the event in the diocese of Abuja, members of the Mothers Union visited select homes for the less privileged with facilities to support their upkeep.
She added that parishes organized seminars and talks bothering on the theme of ‘Celebration of Marriage’ with the aim of teaching standards expected of a Christian Family. The women also organized workshops on how to prepare snacks, special dishes for domestic and commercial purposes.
Mrs Akinola also urged the government to ensure that legislations passed protecting the rights of women and children in the country are effectively implemented, particularly the law against child labour and women trafficking.
