Theological Lectures in Christ Church

As part of its on-going commitment to continuing adult education and in response to requests for a series of lectures about the larger issues of today Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, has arranged a lecture series for Monday evenings in Lent with each lecture beginning at 8 pm.

On Monday 26 February Professor John Kelsey, Florida State University, will speak on ‘Christianity, Islam and the political future’ and he will be followed on 5 March by Professor Sean Freyne from Trinity College, Dublin, who will discuss ‘The person of Jesus Christ and Christian belief today’. On 12 March ‘Belief and Science’ will be the topic of Professor William Reville from UCC while on 19 March Professor John May, Irish School of Ecumenics will speak on ‘Is tolerance enough? From multiculturalism to interreligious dialogue’ The final lecture, on 26 March, will be given by Professor Nigel Biggar, Professor of Theology and Ethics in TCD and a Canon of Christ Church., who will speak on ’Contemporary medical ethics and Christian concerns.'

The entry fee for each lecture is €10 (concessions €7) and bookings may be made through Canon John Bartlett, Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin 8.

This Monday evening at 7.30 pm in Maynooth the Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome, the Rt Revd John Flack, will give a lecture on the contemporary Anglican-Roman Catholic paradigm. This lecture is a collaboration between St Patrick’s College and the TCD Chaplaincy. In Sandford Church, Ranelagh, at 7 pm there will be a concert by the Naugatuck Chamber Choir in aid of the Royal Hospital, Donnybrook.

In Dublin on Tuesday the Executive Committee of the Representative Church Body will meet in Church of Ireland House, while at lunchtime there will be a recital in St Patrick’s Cathedral by the Brookline High School Choir.

On Ash Wednesday there will be a celebration of the Eucharist in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, at 5.45 pm while in Christ Church Cathedral, at 6 pm, there will be a Eucharist with the Imposition of Ashes. RTE will broadcast a Liturgy for Ash Wednesday with the Revd Tom Gordon at 7.30 pm.

At lunchtime, on Thursday, in Derry Cathedral, there will be the first of a series of Lenten addresses on the theme ‘In the global village does the Irish Church’s claim of a gospel for all seem shallow?’. The speaker will be playwright and broadcaster, Eddie Kerr.

The Central Communications Board has released details of the magazine and website competition for 2007. In the print media section entries are invited from diocesan magazines and parish magazines/newsletters and in the website section from diocesan and parish websites. Entries to both sections are also welcome from other committees or groups associated with the Church of Ireland. Entry forms may be had from Mrs J. Compston, Press Office, Church of Ireland House, 61-67 Donegall Street, Belfast BT1 2QH and the closing date for entries in 28 February. The winners will be announced at the General Synod in Kilkenny in May.
