Church defends immigration sanctuary

The Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Most Revd Andrew Hutchison, has joined Canadian Church leaders in defending the Church's 'time-honoured' and 'biblically-rooted tradition' of providing sanctuary to refugees facing deportation, the Anglican Journal of Canada has reported.

Archbishop Hutchison stated in the news report that while the Canadian Immigrant and Refugee Protection Act of 2001 provided for an appeals procedure, this procedure - despite becoming law - had yet to be implemented. "What we're asking our government is to stand by its own legislation. There's no contradiction between our legal and moral obligations here," he said.
