St John's Episcopal Church unveils new mural

Church representatives, campaign groups and local politicians earlier this month launched Amnesty International's Edinburgh Festival campaign for an imprisoned Burmese journalist by unveiling a large city centre mural.

The mural (10ft by 10ft) is positioned on the wall of St John 's Episcopal Church at the west end of Princes Street . It highlights U Win Tin, a 74 year old award-winning journalist.

U Win Tin was secretary of his country's democratic opposition until 1989, when he was imprisoned for his beliefs by the military regime. Despite increasing ill health, and having served his original sentence, he is still in jail. U Win Tin has been adopted by Amnesty International as the prisoner who will be highlighted at activities throughout the Festival. Amnesty International hope to collect thousands of postcards from festival goers calling for his release.
