Northern Argentina holds election for new bishop

The Diocese of Northern Argentina of the Province of the Southern Cone is to elect a new bishop after the retirement of the current incumbent after 30 years of service.

The election of the new suffragan bishop will take place on 3 June. Six candidates have been chosen from among the three major tribal groups living in the Formosa region. Four come from the Wichi peoples, one from the Toba, and another from Chorote. The new Bishop is to replace Mario Marino, himself Wichi.

The electorate is made up of 40 clergy and 40 laity, with the vote happening at Ingeniero Juarez, central to the Anglican Church's evangelism, translation, health and education programmes for more than a century. There are seventy churches in the area.

The election process will be supervised by a committee from Paraguay headed by the Rt Revd Andres Rodriguez. The new bishop will serve under the diocesan bishop, the Rt Revd Humberto Axt. The Church of the Province of the Southern Cone requests your prayers from the Communion.
