80th Bishop of Bangor elected

At a press conference held today at the Church in Wales' provincial offices in Cardiff (1100 am, Tuesday 4 May 2004), the result of the episcopal election to choose the 80th Bishop of Bangor was announced. The next Bishop of Bangor is to be the Ven Anthony Crockett, presently Archdeacon of Carmarthen in the diocese of St Davids.

Making the announcement, the Most Rev Dr Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales said: "In the period since the Bangor electoral college in mid-March, the Bench of Bishops of the Church in Wales have been working hard on drawing up a set of competencies and abilities which they considered essential for the role of Bishop of Bangor.

"At the end of that process, the Bench of Bishops were unanimous in believing that Archdeacon Anthony Crockett was the person who best fitted the requirements to be the next Bishop of Bangor. I am delighted therefore to be introducing him to you today."

Responding, Ven Anthony Crockett said:

"When the Archbishop telephoned me a fortnight ago and asked me to come and discuss the possibility of my becoming the Bishop of Bangor, I have to admit that I was amazed - shocked, even - and at the same time very humbled. Since then, I have spoken to other members of the Bench of Bishops, and I have come to the conclusion that I cannot decline the invitation."
